Associate VP Major & Principal Gifts

Silver Spring, MD  Full-time  Executive

Reporting to the President of the Foundation and serving as an integral member of the senior management team, the Foundation Associate Vice President Major & Principal gifts primary responsibility is to lead and expand a comprehensive individual and foundation giving program, raising both major and principal gifts. The AVP is expected to elevate Foundation Relations and work with other revenue generating business units in the design and implementation of capital campaigns and other strategic priorities. The Associate Vice President also carries a select portfolio of principal gift prospects. The AVP cultivates, solicits and stewards donors at the highest levels.

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree (Required)
Minimum Work Experience
12 years experience in major and planned giving fundraising. Responsible for building, managing and expanding fundraising programs, preferably within an academic medical center or not-for-profit setting. Experience securing and managing a planned giving program is preferred and desirable. (Required)

12 years proven track record of successful staff management and fundraising, as well as a history of closing major/principal gifts and growing fundraising programs. (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
A dynamic, mission-driven, visionary leader/fundraiser with high energy, enthusiasm, and experience to expand a program.
A proven track record in securing principal level gifts is essential.
An excellent fundraising strategist and meticulous executor, he/she will have a proven ability to creatively build and expand fundraising programs and a track record of securing philanthropic support.
Demonstrated success in building, managing and moving a pipeline of donors and prospects.
Proven ability to engage leaders, volunteers, and colleagues in a manner that generates excitement, shared purpose and meaningful action.
Genuine interest in children's health care.
Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), combined with the ability to elicit and translate various priorities into compelling cases for support.
Understanding of financial and budget administration.
Unquestioned integrity, as well as demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of professionalism and best practices.
Flexible, patient and a healthy sense of perspective.
Credibility and professional acumen to garner confidence of the Foundation and CNMC leadership, board members, volunteers, staff, donors, prospects, and colleagues.

Experience in major and planned giving fundraising. Responsible for building, managing and expanding fundraising programs, preferably within an academic medical center or not-for-profit setting.

Functional Accountabilities
Leadership

  • In partnership with the AVP Major & Principal Gift colleagues: develop strategies and execute tactics required to manage and grow a comprehensive major, principal and planned giving program to achieve a $80m-$100m annual run-rate.

  • Oversee major gift officers and evolve as necessary to deliver the best in class fundraising and ensure a high level of donor satisfaction. When appropriate, serve as the key senior leader within the Foundation team to manage the day-to-day aspects of capital campaign planning and management. This includes oversight of campaign consultant and staff.

  • Develop and oversee a strategic philanthropic growth plan for Institutional Foundations.

  • Develop and oversee a strategic growth plan for philanthropic support of research priority areas.

  • Ensure a coordinated and collaborative approach with colleagues in respect to fundraising. Develop and maintain best fundraising and operational practices, utilizing clearly defined goals, objectives and transparent methods with which to measure success.

  • Positively contribute to an organizational environment where teamwork, collaboration, and dedication are expected and required. Contribute broadly to all aspects of the fulfillment of the Foundation's mission and philanthropic goals.

  • Work closely with Foundation leadership on resolving strategic issues.

Management

  • Oversee major/principal gift officers and capital campaign consultants and staff to ensure their programs are optimally performing and growing.

  • Work collaboratively with staff to increase dollars raised for all programs in these functional areas.

  • Work with the staff to build high functioning volunteer leadership.

  • Develop quarterly metrics for each fundraiser; coach and ensure achievement of metrics.

  • Model and coach a creative manner of approaching issues and devising sound solutions based on good judgment and collaboration.

Fundraising

  • Lead role to increase fundraising in major/principal giving programs and capital campaign planning and readiness.

  • Develop volunteer leadership and engage volunteer leaders in the major giving fundraising process.

  • Strategically and effectively support leadership and volunteers in fundraising, as appropriate; this includes participating and/or leading the solicitation of gifts with volunteer leadership and/or senior management and Foundation Leadership.

  • Maintain and grow a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects.
